London, England

Chapter Twenty-Six

Despite the late hour, London was still alive with people in pursuit of Friday night drinks, and people on their way home from work, just wishing to get from one place to another.

Marylebone Road was as busy as anywhere else in the city, with streams of vehicles bustling down the street, with one lane for taxis and buses, and two lanes for the rest.

The traffic heading west paused at a light and pedestrians walked quickly over the road. No one ever slowed down in this city.

Then the lights turned to green. As did the traffic lights to the left. And to the right. Meaning that the cars drove into the junction and collided with a symphony of car horns. Minor crashes occurred, but furious tempers were the real casualty of these accidents. Men and women alike stepped out of their cars and shouted obscenities at the other drivers who were shouting the same thing back, furious that their cars were dented.

It wasn’t until tempers forced these people to cross the road to one another that they noticed – all lights were, in fact, on green.

Then they weren’t.

They changed to amber. To red. To green. To amber to red to green.

Again and again, they flashed.

Before anyone could articulate their surprise, the streets lights went out. Then came back on again.

As did the lights of nearby buildings.

“What the hell is going on?” demanded one woman, angry that she was going to have to drive a battered car to her mother’s the next day.

A man took his phone out to call his insurance company. Another took their phone out to call the police. Another took their phone out to complain to the power company.

But none of them could call anyone. They had no signal. Which was bizarre. This was the busiest city in the country, there were masts everywhere. Yet, somehow, their 4G had been shut off.

Then the lights went out completely. Which seemed bizarre. Power cuts were rare nowadays.

It did not last long, however. Within ten minutes the lights came back on. The traffic lights resumed working. Nearby buildings were lit up once again. Another power station helping out, maybe. Who knew? Either way, it hadn’t lasted long, and citizens of London were able to drive their dented cars home.

Whatever had happened was brief, and now it was over.

But that was just London.

It happened next in Brighton. Then Edinburgh. Then Birmingham. Then Manchester.

Indeed, it happened for five minutes in various cities, and no one knew why.
